Day 6 Bar Harbor/Bucksport  June 27, 2021

Yesterday we took a bus to Bar Harbor and then took a narrated trolley tour into Acadia National Park.  First we went to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard at 1500 feet.  We could not see six inches in front of your face so on we went. I asked our guide several times, “How often do you actually see a view?” He never really answered me but later said, “Maybe you can find it on a postcard.” I think I will wait until we have internet and google image the views. Next, on to Thunder Hole.  There were so many people, we just looked from the top as I have seen the ocean splash up on the rocks. Next we went to Jordan Pond. Now we were talking. Too bad we didn’t eat lunch there. You sat out on the lawn, next to this beautiful pond (actually a lake, 600 feet deep).  It was so pretty.  Interestingly enough, it is famous for its popovers.  Not a surprise, because MA is where I learned about popovers, when we were first married. I bought my popover pan in MA so it is rather worn and I have looked for a new one of that style, not to be found even on Amazon.

Later when walking in Bar Harbor, we found the identical pan that I now have. So it will be coming home with us.  Popovers for me have always been a mystery, sometimes they are perfect and other times, not so much. Sometimes they don’t even rise at all. Attached to the pan is the supposed famous recipe from Jordon Pond. It is very different from any of the other million recipes I have tried, so anxious to give it a try.

Our trolley driver was most informative, so learned a lot about the area. It is an area started by old money, and is now a place where the new money people live in the summer. Rockefeller loved his carriage rides, so today there are over 45 miles of trails. Nothing with a motor is allowed on these trails. How fun it would be to ride horses there.

More to follow,
